 Love in libraries
Everyone has been a to a library. I wonder whether it's more of a community service wanting us to return.
Are people who admit loving libraries shunned?Not cool
I am a regular library visitor possibly and probably to keep my mind active. I'd rather borrow books for browsing rather than paying top dollar.
Perhaps we undervalue the library or we will only protest once it closes.

I have chosen this photo from La Coruna library. La Coruna is my home city in Spain in the Northwest where I still have family. The woman in the photo is catching up on reading and is really excited. Suddenly there's not enough free time so she must read and learn as much as possible.

Investigative Exercise 4 Youtube – use this in your subject line

 

Youtube is a specialised website where videos can be uploaded and viewed. Links from webpages can be made to view the videos. Videos can also be but embedded in websites for example on a blog. Youtube is very popular and well known, other examples of videosharing sites are available through Google and Yahoo.

You can embed a video in one of your blog posts. Here we will embed a video of Nancy Pearl.

The Nancy Pearl video showcases some popular children's books with the emphasis on audiobooks. In this video Nancy Pearl is promoting books for libraries and she is an author herself. I think she is interested in how books can allow their readers to enter the realms of fantasy while reading and using their imagination.

Investigative Exercise 5 Social Networking – use this in your subject line

People can have their own personal webpage housed in a communal website. It is a great way to build up professional networks and collaborate in a workplace. It is considered a community building tool.  Facebook is currently very popular for individuals and there is a feature where you can create page for a celebrity, band or business.  Take a look at what the National Library of Australia has done on Facebook.

Do a Google search for the following phrase - “I'll Bet I Can Find 1,000,000 People Who Think Libraries Are Important”. Take a look at this advocacy site on Facebook. It also has some great quotes about the value of libraries. Write a post on your blog about why you think it is a good idea for a library to participate on a social networking site, or why not. Make certain you label your post.

Libraries will always make some use of Facebook. Given the popularity of the site , any librarian can literally advertise their library using the wonders of the world wide web. Everybody is interested in images or even joining a list of friends of the library. Facebook can even serve as a comparison tool or a way to protest on a library issue if there is a need.
For me facebook is just for fun and I prefer going to the library or using the OPAC.

 

Investigative Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking – use this in your subject line

 

Take a look at the catalogue of the State Library of Tasmania http://www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/. Search the catalogue for the book Born or bred?: Martin Bryant: the making of a mass murderer by Robert Wainwright.  Read the reviews made by library users about this book.

My library , Canterbury library does have its own blog and its quite interactive. There are links to other libraries and resources. Also one can submit a book review under the "what are you reading?" section. Useful library events and services are advertised such as book a librarian.

As for the state library of Tasmania and the Clarence river sites , I feel the reviews are very brief in the style of facebook posts. Martin Bryant's story is very personal. Even his mother is mentioned in the book review.

 In this link the staff from the st George institute of TAFE visit the UNSW library. I was a graduate of UNSW in September 2008. I find this podcast interesting for two reasons. The Tafe teachers are learning about the workings of a new librbary.
Also the question is posed , who would like another library tour?I know for a fact that Uni libraries are big and can take more than a day to use and learn how to navigate the different sections and resources.

I can and hope the library of the future will have robots. Trolleys will have motors and do the shelving automatically. Any job that doesn't require a human voice or interaction will only be benefited. Even better , 24 hour books returns of online libraries where books are sent to our mobiles as ebooks. Library cards should also connect to wi -fi networks or build into scanners on cameraphone.
In short paper and electronic books should be optional.

Investigative Exercise 9 Community Profiles – use this in your subject line

 

I belong to Canterbury Council. My local library is Lakemba which is literally ten minutes walk away. Lakemba is an interesting place and is also known for its large Muslim community and its imposing mosque. The local training ground for the Canterbury Bulldogs rugby league team is nearby at Belmore.

Lakemba is and will remain a multicultural community. With every visit to my library this is clear. Library staff are very diverse and there's never a shortage of foreign language books to loan from many parts of the globe including Korea , the Middle East , Vietnam , Chinese and Vietnamese.
Upon entering the building multilingual signage and community posters for NESB speakers are everywhere. There is also a ,learning English section and specialist section homework help service room.

As far as I am aware and in the plus 10 years I've lived in the Canterbury LGA , Lakemba library has always had technology but this is evolving into web 2.0
Just one look at the library blog is a good example. We have reading lists , book reviews , chat to a librarian , facebook , twitter and council links.
I once asked for advice on e-books and the librarian directed me to a mobile phone app , borrow box that didn't work possibly due to storage issues
As soon as you arrive in the library there are internet computers and you log in. You can also use an internet catalogue to your leisure.
The librbary also uses media such as ipads for loans so clients can download apps and read ebooks and even message the library.
Lakemba library has an adult fiction , youth , graphic novel , community languages. translations. Reference is a small section but is also evolving into legal and social services information.

 

 

Investigative Exercise 11 Recommendations – use this in your subject line

 


I recommend everyone become aware of their blogs. Are they really that easy to use as it seems that most young people will be happier to access a Facebook page for their local library. Facebook has become so omnipresent technologically to the extent that people of all ages can status - update on their phones on public transport or immediately detect good or bad Facebook pages.


However , blogs are great if used effectively. Not everything should be shared or published so easily thus the term blog or internet etiquette. You wouldn't tell a restaurant to close down with a blog anyway?

The colours on your blog can be changed. 

I previously made some changes to my layout in the class time. Now I have added a blue background. It's a really peaceful and simple colour.
